The Florida Manatee

These pictures of the Florida Manatee were taken at the Manatee Viewing Center located next to the Big Bend Power Plant in Apollo Beach, Florida. The center is owned and operated by Tampa Electric Co. The Center is open from November 1 to April 15 and is free of charge. Full details may be found by clicking here.

The water is murky because of the Hillsborough and Alafia Rivers flowing into Hillsborough Bay. Both of these rivers are black water rivers, so called because of the high level of tannic acid released into the rivers by decaying vegetation upstream.
